The fire is still weeks from the coast when Eli, Mason, and Riley start building something that looks like a life.
Eli has steady work at the animal shelter in Brookings, Oregon, and a dog in run nine he has been told, firmly, he cannot keep. Mason wants a title in a kitchen that won't give him one. Riley is learning what her photographs are for. Before the season turns, each of them has one thing left unsettled in Durango: an apartment, a father, a mentor she has not spoken to in two years. They drive east to finish it, and come home to a county on fire.
The Longest Road Home is a literary novel about the work of staying: what it asks of three people who have spent a long time leaving, what a wildfire takes from the people who live under it, and what a small town does when it has to show up for itself.
